Hackers: Are people who try to deliberately get your password, then hacks into your account, and sometimes changes the password so that the original owner of the account cannot log in. Sometimes, when on an account, the hacker can do 'bad' things: they may sell all your rares and hot buys for cheap prices, they may send hate mail to all their best friends, they may change your MeDoll, or presentation or whatever.
Scammers: Are people who cons other people into buying a rare Stardoll item for a cheap price. Scammers are not interested in your password, and they are very good with StarBazaar prices and things. There are different ways to be scammed. For example, you and a 'scammer' are planning to trade (of course, you have no idea that person is a scammer). Let's say that you are going to trade your DKNY Broken Stripe Dress for the scammer's Paulina Porizkova RC item. You two are on chat, and you say that you are *going first; you put the DKNY on sale for 50, and the scammer buys it. Then you tell the scammer to put up the PP item. But then, your scammer just laughs and blocks you, so you cannot have any communication with him/her.
People tend to scam more than to hack. Scamming usually occurs when you are upgraded to Superstar Membership, and it gives you the feature to sell clothes, therefore it also gives a chance to scammers. But, scamming also occurs in non-superstars. For example, someone tells you to send gifts worth 80 stardollars, in exchange for an account or whatever. After you send the gifts though, the scammer tells you ridiculous excuses.
*going first - Going first in a trade; putting your item up first in the Starbazaar, and then your trader proceeds to put his/her item up for sale. You may get scammed if you go first, it really depends on who you're trading with.
